
Last Saturday December 12, Asian Pacific AIDS Intervention Team (APAIT) crowned Imperial Court of Los Angeles Hollywood Representative Miss Karla Ferreira as this year’s Miss Quest. Quest is a pageant which encourages the development and advancement of transgenders and celebrates the uniqueness and diversity of the transgender community. Women competing represented the finest community-based organizations helping transgenders today including Bienestar Human Services, AIDS Project Los Angeles, The Los Angeles and Hollywood Imperial Court, the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center, and Christopher Street West.
Transgender Advocates Ms. Alexis Rivera of the Transgender Law Center of San Francisco and Mr. AJ King, Co-Chair of the Los Angeles HIV Prevention Planning Committee hosted this year’s event.
Guest judges for the evening included Jeffrey Jenkins, reality TV executive producer of MTV’s Styl’d and Keeping Up With the Kardashians; Valerie Spencer, Executive Director of the Transcend Empowerment Institute; Dr. John Kowalczyk, Tamarra Jones, CHES, Manager of Orange County HIV Planning and Coordination, and Tony Valenzuela, interim Executive Director of the Lambda Literary Foundation.
Karine Wang, delegate representing the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center received this year’s Connie Norman Advocacy Award. Quest also honored Mario Perez, Director of the Office of AIDS Programs and Policy for the Visionary Leadership Award, and California Assembly Member Ted Lieu, recipient of the Courage in Leadership Award.
