The Asian Pacific AIDS Intervention Team Celebrates 20 Years of Service

By Noel Alumit

The Asian Pacific AIDS Intervention Team (APAIT), Southern California’s largest provider of HIV/AIDS services to Asian and Pacific Islanders, will celebrate its 20 year anniversary with a gala on Sunday, October 14th at 5pm. Festivities will be at the Music Box at the Henry Fonda Theatre in Hollywood, California.

In 1987, the AIDS Intervention Team started as a program of the social organization Asian Pacific Lesbians and Gays (APLG). It was developed to address the needs of their members who, like so many gay men of the time, were getting infected then dying of HIV/AIDS.

The AIDS Intervention Team, a small volunteer run group, left the APLG nest, added “Asian Pacific” to complete its moniker, and is now a million dollar non-profit with offices in Downtown Los Angeles and Orange County. It maintains a staff of over twenty people providing services ranging from preventing HIV infection to directly working with HIV positive clients to better their lives. Last year, approximately 10,000 individuals were served.

APAIT’s anniversary theme is “Compassion in Action,” reinforcing Compassion as a true constant in the organization’s 20 years of existence. The gala will feature cocktails, an auction, and dinner. Honorary Committee Members for the evening include Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Senator Dianne Feinstein, Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard, Los Angeles County Second Dist. Board of Supervisor Yvonne Burke, and many others. Actress Amy Hill will host and Last Comic Standing Winner Dat Phan will entertain. The evening will also honor founding Director Dean Goishi, the Clinical Support staff of 5P21/Rand Schrader Clinic, and the Wells Fargo Foundation for their contributions in the AIDS fight.

The Music Box at the Henry Fonda Theatre is located at 6126 Hollywood Blvd. in Hollywood, CA, 90028. For more information, please visit: www.apaitonline.org. Contact: Jury Candelario, 213-553-1832, jcandelario@apaitonline.org or Barbara Jacobs, 310-442-6744, Barbara@BJevents.org.
