The Orange County Programs, through the generosity of the California Endowment, is providing prevention and education services to Asian and Pacific Islander men who have sex with men. The program has successfully adapted and tailored the CDC's recommended Popular Opinion Leader (POL) model. POL is an intervention based on a program that identifies, trains, and enlists the help of key community opinion leaders to change risky sexual norms and behaviors in their communities. This peer-based program includes trainings as well as leadership and community development components. This program is also based on the diffusion of innovation/social influence principles, which states that trends and innovations are often initiated by a relatively small segment of opinion leaders in the community. Once innovations are visibly modeled and accepted, they then diffuse throughout a population to influence others.
